And just like that, our mudroom became the cutest room in our home.
When we moved into our 1920’s era urban bungalow five years ago we inherited a pastel yellow kitchen and mudroom. A couple years ago I painted the kitchen a grey blue, and imagined I’d eventually paint this mudroom white. Eeeeventually. In my dreams. Big projects come along slowly at this phase of life with littles’ boo boos to kiss and laundry bubbling forth from every nook and cranny.
Then it happened: the 2020 quarantine. And, it turns out it only takes a global pandemic to get me to complete a house project!
Duly noted.
When Photowall reached out, asking if I would blog about wallpapering a space in my home, I was honored, delighted, and….um…scared. Wallpaper feels exciting but daunting. I recall a few old movies where the newlywed protagonist has an unwieldily strip of wallpaper falling on her head as she attempts to wrangle it to the wall.
But, once I came upon this enchanting Woodlands print by Garbo & Friends, adorned with itty birds, acorns, and oak leaves, I knew I had to take the leap and wallpaper my mudroom.
(Other prints I found darling: Clover Vanilla, Tanglewood Forest Veridian, Tanglewood Forest Nightfall)
Glue comes with a wallpaper purchase. But, I added an assembly kit to my order, and found this to be a quite helpful as a novice wallpaperer. It gave me confidence knowing that I had everything I needed to complete the project!
My order came within days in three small boxes. I watched Photowall’s How-to Video as well as B & Q’s wallpapering videos for tips on how to wallpaper around windows and corners.
After watching these I realized the process would be very simple! I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly and easily it was to complete the mudroom all by myself (I sent the kids outside one day and my husband played with them another two). When I mentioned to a friend I would be using glue she stated “oh I wouldn’t ever want to use glue.” So, in case you are intimidated by glue: don’t be! I actually found the glue advantageous in that once you had the wallpaper down you could shift it a little to get it into the exact position. It was very forgiving! A tip I will pass on is to not use too much glue on the wall - a thin layer is better as long as it covers all surface area. Also, I was able to keep the glue uncovered in my basin for four days and it didn’t dry out (I had wondered about that).
