Lilias is no bigger than a thumb...and since she was turning one
we celebrated her with a Thumbelina party!
Our home bloomed with giant crepe poppies, leaves, daisies, a forget me not, and a cosmo, designed to make the guests feel as wee as Thumbelina. In the tale by Hans Christian Andersen, Thumbelina spends a summer in the forest drinking dew and flower nectar, thus we served fresh brewed hibiscus tea and rose raspberry cupcakes with sugared petals. Lilias' high chair was transformed to a giant flower just as Thumbelina is born from within the petals of a scarlet bloom. Characters in the story inspired our crafts....guests decorated paper butterflies tied with a ribbon just like the white butterfly who aided Thumbelina's escape from the toads by pulling her lily pad downstream. Guests were also taught how to fold green origami "toads" and could enter their jumping creations in a friendly hopping contest! Aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends were recruited for a mini acting out of the story of Thumbelina with Lilias playing the title role. At the end of the play, Thumbelina receives a pair of white wings...our gift to her!
