This is Erin. She is Citizen Potawatomi.
When young she was given her Native name...Nanogaskawe which means "Hummingbird Woman." In Native culture, hummingbirds symbolize messengers and carriers of joy! Her ancestors once roamed this land, Prophetstown, where we met to capture these photos. As Erin and her mother shared the history of injustices perpetrated against their family of old I was brokenhearted. Tragically, her great, great grandfather and his tribe were removed from Prophetstown and forced to walk The Trail of Death to Kansas. Only a remnant survived. If her ancestors could have looked ahead, I know they would be proud to see that their resilient spirit lives on in their Hummingbird Woman!
Indomitable Jaelyn and her nine month old darling. Aren't they lovely?
Andrew has a lively, unaffected nature. My first distinct impression of him is as an eighth grader heading a rabid pack of middle school boys in a dog-pile of a favorite male youth leader. I was able to get to know his (still wild) self better once he moved up into the high school ministry and found his passion and gift to point others to Christ through music evident. He bears a worshippers heart and talent and will continue to cultivate this on scholarship for trumpet performance at Ball State beginning this fall!
Grace: spirited...artistic...
hilarious...
a friend to all....
This spitfire and I bonded repelling down a mountain at church camp in Colorado the summer before her eighth grade year. I've watched her grow from lively bean pole to (ever lively) mature woman of faith.
Now she's graduating...and isn't she bright.
